Misty's C-Section...this
was her second and
final litter!
This is Doctor Henke preforming Misty's C-Section.  It
was after hours and Dr, Henke allowed me to be present
for the operation.  While giving the C- section, Misty's
uterus tore so I had her spayed.   If you've ever witnessed
a C-section, it is very hard on a toy breed.  This made my
decision to spay Misty an easy one to make.
RUB RUB RUB!! C- Sections are fast and furious!  We had to deliver 5
pups all at once.  You have to be fast and work on 2 or 3 pups at a
time.  Since it was after hours we only had 2 people to suction, rub
and get these pups breathing.  C section pups don't have the
stimulation of going down the birth canal to get them breathing so you
have to work fast.  It seemed like they would never breathe!    It was
scary and at the same time exhilarating!
After rubbing, suctioning and the like, the pups are placed
on a disk that has been warmed in the microwave.  It will
keep them warm for up to 8 hours.  The placenta still
attached, will be removed when all the pups have been
delivered.  2 down and 3 to go!
All 5 pups are delivered and now there is time to
evaluate the litter and take care of the placentas.
What an experience this was for me!
Here is Denise, Dr. Henke's vet tech/assistant.  She
worked on this little darling until he breathed.  It seemed
like it took forever!  This is one of the most stressful
experiences I've ever had! Albeit one of the best
experience I've had!
After getting Misty stabilized, many thanks, a few hugs
and some help cleaning up, we all left the office at 9:00
pm and headed towards home.  I realized on my ride
home that I hadn't even figured out what I had in my little
puppy basket!  We ended up with 4 boys and a girl.  Misty
had her work cut out for her! Here we are introducing her
to her babies and hoping she would have milk!  Mistys
first litter had to be tube fed for almost 2 weeks!
Wouldn't you know when I started to wean them she
finally came into good milk!
All pups are evaluated and fed.  The ID collars
are crocheted and paperwork filled out, our
new little darlings are happy as can be and are
taking a snooze!
They all weighed in at 4 ounces a
piece give or take a few grams!
Mom and babies all taking a well
deserved nap!
2 days later all are doing well
and have voracious appetites!
2 days later all are growing fast! The next
12 weeks will go so fast.  This is one of the
greatest pleasured I have in my life.
